Switching & Reporting

The Switch Request Form at left tracks
requested and completed Switch Actions
while the Clearance Form at right manages
clearances associated with switched equipment.
The rightmost pane provides access to Switching reports.

The Switching Log form shows archived individual
Switch Actions, as well as a list of the
equipment at any substation at the right side of the form.

SRA maintains a database of switching actions performed by Dispatchers. Flexible query and reporting capability makes SRA useful for both engineering analysis and management reporting. The application contains an extensive database of switchable devices at each substation, to facilitate accurate data entry.

SRA Functionality
SRA replaces other switching reporting processes where field switching events are manually entered into spreadsheets, or other non-searchable logs. Switching data is maintained centrally for extended periods, creating a historical database. SRA adds the advantages of a database for long-term data storage and use, providing a multi-year archive. Features include flexible database search and reporting tools. SRA contains an equipment database that maintains standardized definitions of all switchable equipment at each substation.

The Switching DB consists of a Table defining Substation and device switched, switching action, switching reason, and notes (including Clearance #). It also records the Dispatchers on-duty at the time of the switching and the Foreman and switchmen who performed the switching and any overtime required. Flexible reporting capabilities allow users to define customized searches and reports. Once generated, reports can be printed or automatically e-mailed to engineering or management staff. Drop-down lists are used to simplify data entry and to maintain uniformity in defining switching operations.

SRA Application Architecture
The architecture of the Transaction Database consists of two databases, Switching, and Equipment. The Switchboard Form is used to navigate through the application. The Switching Archive Form: to view the archive of logged switching events and to perform corrections. Maintenance Form: provides access to Maintenance Tables that update combo (drop-down) list values. Help System used to update user help messages. Report Filter form: provides user-defined filters to select archived data for reports.

Ready to Grow
SRA is a subset of the functionality included in ASCE’s Substation Management Application (SMA). SMA includes all the functionality of SRA, but goes on to include an ODBC link to SCADA, which enables graphing and reporting on system loads, and a comprehensive analysis of demand. See the SMA datasheet for more information.

SRA Reporting
SRA includes a set of standard reports which allow users to do monthly and yearly reporting. The user interface includes functionality which makes E-mailing reports to management and engineering staff a snap. As with all ASCE Opera Applications, ASCE offers services to customize any other reports or functions required to meet individual needs.
